General, Geriatric & Hospital Medicine

Providing high quality patient care through education, scholarship, and clinical services is the mission of the Division of General and Geriatric Medicine.  Members of the division have leadership responsibilities in both administrative and education roles in addition to their clinical activities.  The mission of the division is carried out through these roles and in our three areas of clinical focus: Ambulatory Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Hospital Medicine.

An energetic and committed faculty staffs the division including five chief residents and five faculty with dual appointments. Our faculty have teaching roles with medical students and medical residents. Several faculty also hold leadership positions in undergraduate and graduate medical education programs and faculty in Geriatric Medicine teach Fellows in their sub-specialty fellowship program.

Ambulatory Medicine: Section Leader: Dr. Branden Comfort

Faculty physicians provide care and teaching in the Internal Medicine office on site at the University of Kansas Medical Center. They work with medical students in various programs from the first three years of medical school, and work with residents for their ambulatory continuity care experience. Faculty are involved in clinical, educational and administrative leadership roles.

Geriatric Medicine: Section Leader: Dr. Deon Hayley

Geriatrics in Internal Medicine has been a leader in clinical care in the outpatient setting. In particular, we are focused on caring for patients through Transitions of Care especially from the hospital to post-acute care in skilled nursing facilities. Faculty and nurse practitioners care for patients in several regional skilled nursing and long term care facilities, the Memory Disorder clinic for consultative care, home care for patients who are home bound as well as primary and consultative care in the General and Geriatric Medicine outpatient clinic in the Medical Office Building.

Geriatrics faculty have extensive leadership roles in teaching Geriatrics. We direct the one year Geriatrics Fellowship program as well as the Internal Medicine Resident one month mandatory Geriatrics rotation. We teach every Medical Student in the Geriatrics Clerkship and have been very active in innovative develop of teaching programs and curricula supported by internal and National foundation grants. Our Section has also have been successful in publication and dissemination our clinical and educational research.

Hospital Medicine: Section Leader: Dr. Melissa Parkhurst

The Division's Hospitalist staff four academic inpatient ward teams, eight private Hospital services, a medicine consultation service and a triage service at the University of Kansas Hospital. This growing group is committed to the practice and teaching of high-quality patient care. The group has cared for numerous medically complex patients over the last year and provide 24/7 in-house coverage by faculty for quality and safe patient care. Hospitalist faculty are involved in medical directorships, medical student clerkships as well as key clinical faculty positions for the residency program. Faculty have been integral for the development and maintenance of quality improvement projects in the hospital.


One of our full-time faculty spend the majority of their time in funded research and a large number of our faculty have successful scholarship around each of their individual areas of clinical, educational or administrative interest and expertise.
